“Curbing a Sweet Tooth”

I live in New York City, so it’s a given that I’m always on-the-go.  Although, I’m sure this is true for many of you who do not live in the whirlwind that is NYC.

That being said, I often find myself needing a sweet fix in the afternoon, but not wanting to spoil my healthy eating habits and with little time or money to run and get something.

For this dilemma, I have found a simple and cost effective solution.

What I do:

I simply fill my purse, or backpack with a thermos and my favorite flavors of tea.

*Right now I’m loving:

Tazo Tea “Zen” (green tea with lemongrass and spearmint)

Yogi Tea “Detox”

And Guayaki brand Yerba Mate, “Mate Chocolatte” (this has a nice chocolate flavor)

I find that the heat of the tea is super comforting, which is usually what I’m looking for from the sweet fix anyway.  And if I find that I still feel hungry after eating lunch, the tea will also fill my tummy so that I won’t have room for sweet, unsettling treats. In addition, the non green teas I suggested have a sweetness to them that will curb that need for dessert. And having them in my purse at all times keeps me prepared for that inevitable craving.  When it hits, I can either fill my thermos with hot water when I’m at work. Or…

And here’s the best tip right here…

When I’m out and about, I know I can walk into any Starbucks and get a cup of hot water for free.  That’s right, for free.  I don’t do it all the time, but it’s good to know when you’re in a pinch. I wait in line and simply ask for a tall cup of hot water.  I have yet to be charged for it. (With that said, you should also offer patronage to said company on alternate visits)

In addition, while in Starbucks at the accoutrement station, you can add fun flavors that will make your beverage taste sweeter. Flavors like nutmeg and cocoa.  Be creative.  Remember it didn’t cost you anything ;).

I don’t know about you, but there are a few things that make me feel instantly “cool”.  One is walking around in sunglasses, another is chewing gum, and the final is walking around with a “cup of coffee”.  Too cool for school.  Instant coolness for the price of a tea bag and your health intact. Win! Win!

*You can also get a hot water refill at any Starbucks if you find yourself still carrying the same cup later in the day and want some more tea.

**This tip can apply to traveling too.  I definitely packed tea bags in my luggage when I went on vacation and always bring tea bags to my parents’ house, as well as my in-laws’ when we visit.   It ensures that I have that comforted feeling after dinner from a flavor I’m familiar with anywhere I go (kinda like a grown up, easily portable teddy bear).  All you need is hot water.

Good luck and let me know if it works for you and what teas you find work best for you!
